Now I got a buddy by the name of Chuck and Chuck lives for sports! So much so, as an alumni he believes Texas Southern has too much city wide pride to not have their games on the yard as it would boost the moral and spirit of the students, alumni and local spectators can marvel at the action in their backyards, players will play with a sense of pride ultimately creating a winning environment...for the future of course (but that's a topic for another blog)! But the 4th Largest metropolitan city in the U.S. just added another football program and they aren't looking to disappoint.
A small private college located on the outskirts of the city in Stafford, TX looks to put their names on the map in the city as they're boasting a 3-1 record of their inaugural season at North American University. YUP! You read that correctly, North American University and it's right here in our backyard! The Stallions are led by Athletic Director and Head Coach Ken Apande, whose nothing new to balling out between the hashes based on his HS, College and professional highlights and
accomplishments as an athlete and his tenure in coaching on these levels as well.
With some familiar Houston talent like WR Jailin Singleton, a graduate of Westbury HS who seems to be touchdown magnet with his big play speed and deep threat ability. The defense looks solid as the Turnover Chain was brought out for DB Rashaan Johnson a graduate of Houston Sterling who came up big on a busted play with a touchdown saving strip and fumble recovery returned for 30-yrds in last weeks close loss to Louisiana Christian Community College 19-26.
Personally I'm excited for Coach Apande. Even with the pandemic looming, he's put together a pretty solid schedule for his team and with a 3-1 start, it doesn't look like they plan on slowing things down. Eric Moreno of USA football reports the school has interest in becoming a "full fledged" member competing in the NAIA by 2021 as they compete against a mix of DII, DIII, NAIA and even Preps. the Sooner Athletic Conference could be a possible landing spot for the Stallions. The Sooner Athletic Conference is home to the 8-2 (7-1 SAC ) HBCU Langston University and the 9-2 (8-1 SAC) Conference champions Ottowa University in Arizona.
It's no telling where the university will find itself but one thing I feel confident about is the leadership and direction this team is trending. The Stallions will be traveling to Canyon, TX to take the field against DII West Texas A&M. Put em on your radar Chuck!
